Dear Friend,

Tennessee is one of the hardest places to vote in the country. We used to be the 10th easiest state to vote in; now we are 48th.

I’ve been working for years to increase voter participation in Middle Tennessee with our very successful Project Register and with my public criticism of voter suppression by our Republican legislature.

Our state has passed laws that are designed to reduce turnout – of everyone, but particularly poor people, people of color, and college students. And now our state is even fighting against letting us vote by mail during COVID-19! We have won that issue for the August election but not for the November election.

We shouldn’t have to choose between our vote and our health. Forty-five states and 95% of America are able to vote absentee to reduce risk of getting COVID-19, but Tennesseans may not?

I’ve had enough.

I have just reintroduced a constitutional amendment that would guarantee every American the right to vote. We have already passed HR 1, which would expand access to the ballot box – under the leadership of my colleagues like Rep. John Lewis – but the Senate has refused to act. We need the constitutional amendment. No state should be allowed to deny or abridge the right of its citizens to vote.

While we tackle the problems of voter suppression, police brutality, COVID-19, and a struggling economy, I’m also running for re-election on August 6th. It’s my honor to serve you in Congress. If you can, I would appreciate your financial support. I don’t do a lot of fundraising, but when I do, it means a lot when it comes from friends and supporters like you. If you can give, you will help my campaign by my next fundraising deadline, this Tuesday, June 30th?

I hope everyone votes EARLY to avoid the lines. We will have 14 days of Early Voting, starting July 17th. Let’s make every day count.

Thanks for your past support, and you can call me on my cell anytime: (615) 714-1719.

Jim
