Late last week, new congressional maps were submitted to the California State Legislature.

This process was triggered by an alarming development: Texas Republicans — at Donald Trump’s command — are redrawing their congressional maps to pick up five more seats.

They know that if the election were held today, Democrats would retake the House. So instead of shifting course and abandoning their unpopular agenda, they’re trying to game the system to hold on to power.

As the largest state in the country, California has a responsibility to respond to this blatant power grab. And yesterday, we took our first official step.

While I’m still reviewing the details of the proposed map, one thing is certain: I plan to continue representing the Sacramento region in the next Congress.

But make no mistake: this fight won’t be easy. Republicans are preparing to flood California with millions in outside spending to stop us from restoring fair maps and hold the Trump Administration accountable.

This moment is bigger than any single district. That’s why I gave up some Democratic voters in my district to strengthen our overall chances of winning back the House majority. That decision could make my own race more competitive — but it’s the right thing to do.
