Over the last decade, more than 5 billion starfish have perished before scientists even discovered what was killing them — a devastating epidemic known as sea star wasting disease.
The ripple effects have been massive: exploding sea urchin populations, the collapse of entire kelp forests, and destroyed habitats for fish, sea otters, seals, and more.
Here’s the good news: After years of research, scientists have finally discovered the cause of this epidemic — a bacterial pathogen — giving us a path forward to save these vital species and restore fragile marine ecosystems.
But while SEEC Members push for stronger climate and wildlife protections, far-right politicians are working to slash science funding and silence researchers who are working to protect critically endangered species like this.
Thanks to your help in 2024, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 119th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
