The current Texas lawmakers’ recent actions in redistricting outside of the ten-year cycle is foul play, and just another example of bending the knee to Trump’s unlawful demands. If these lawmakers succeed and the maps are redrawn, the Republican majority in the House could increase by up to five seats, meaning they will have the numbers to pass even more harmful legislation. If it can happen in Texas, it could happen in other states, too. Cuts to healthcare, a national abortion ban, and control of our own lives and bodies are all on the line.
This is not politics as usual. This is a deliberate act to dismantle democracy as we know it through racist gerrymandering to favor Republicans and consolidate power for themselves, billionaires, and white nationalists. It is an assault on our rights and freedoms. Project 2025 is here, and there are supervillains in the White House. And unlike the movies, there is no superhero coming to save us from fascism. It’s up to each of us to be the heroes for our communities and our children. Our democracy and our bodies belong to us.
It is on us to fight for the world we want to live in, where all people can make decisions about their reproductive healthcare, including abortion, free from stigma. A central part of this includes fair elections and a democracy that works for all of us.
