Trump loyalists in Congress have a slate of proposals to celebrate him and
his authoritarian policies. MAGA lawmakers want his face on Mount Rushmore
and U.S. currency, and his name on airports and the Kennedy Center. They
even think he should win the Nobel Peace Prize.^1
Rep. Jason White called Trump a "transformational leader."^2 Rep. Andy
Ogles said Trump is leading the country through "America's Golden Age."^3
And Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said in her bid to get Trump on Mount Rushmore
that he has done what "no other president has been able to accomplish."^4
This far-right fawning emboldens Trump's dangerous, anti-democratic
agenda.
The attempts to "immortalize" Trump while he's still the sitting president
— as he paves over the Rose Garden, builds a $200 million White House
ballroom, and pressures the Smithsonian to alter exhibits about his
impeachment^5 — are all hallmarks of a tyrant.

Just two months ago, Trump put on a wasteful, grotesque military parade
celebrating his birthday. Putting Trump's own face on Mount Rushmore would
be another act of a strongman.
The drive to put Trump's face on Mount Rushmore is particularly disturbing
because the monument is built in the Black Hills on unceded Lakota
territory — deeply important land that the U.S. government stole from
Native Americans.^6 And the person who led the construction of Mount
Rushmore had ties to the KKK.^7
Federal law bans living figures from being put on currency. But that
hasn't stopped multiple GOP efforts to get Trump on money.^8 This MAGA
fandom emboldens Trump's authoritarian policies and his brazen attempt to
control history. Our lawmakers in Congress must stop all of these
ridiculous, dangerous bills.
