Alabama’s death penalty system is broken. It is plagued by racial disparities and does not provide adequate safeguards against executing people with mental disabilities. And executions in our state are too often shrouded in secrecy. That includes Alabama’s protocols for executing people via nitrogen hypoxia, also known as gas suffocation.

Our partners at Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty have endorsed a petition from Death Penalty Action calling for a stop to nitrogen gas suffocation. Please join them and more than 27,000 people from around the world by adding your name to the petition today.

Alabama has carried out five nitrogen gas executions from January 2024 to June 2025. As the petition notes, multiple witnesses to previous gas suffocation executions described “a horrific and torturous experience that should be found unconstitutional.”
