Hello, everyone. Thanks to war, conflict, economic catastrophes, and the climate crisis, global displacement rises every year. If you’re far from the places hit hardest, it’s easy to tune out the hardships that displaced people endure — but that doesn’t mean they don’t go on enduring these dangers with the hope of finding stability and security. A few of those dangers are at the heart of a new longform report at Inkstick. Working alongside photographer Maryam Ashrafi, Nidžara Ahmetašević and Andrew Connelly have done a deep dive into the landmines and border violence that haunt the journey for refugees and migrants leaving Bosnia and trying to reach the Europe. Closer to home, Inkstick field reporter Taylor Barnes has written a doggedly researched feature about the young Mormons who, horrified by Israel’s war in Gaza and its backing from Washington, have raised the banner of solidarity and called for an end to the bloodshed. That’s not all we’ve got at Inkstick. It was a noteworthy encounter, as NATO members agreed to allocate 5% of GDP to defense spending by 2035. But there are some crucial caveats. “Gaza Genocide Provokes Anti-War Dissent Among Mormons” by Taylor Barnes (Aug. 12) As Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip intensifies by the day, Mormon anti-war campaigners are targeting the hearts, minds, and flush investment fund of the 17 million-strong Utah-based religion — a high-impact target since the church is believed to have the largest investment portfolio of any religious organization in the country. “Mines, Memory, and Migration on Bosnia’s Perilous Border” by Nidžara Ahmetašević & Andrew Connelly (Aug. 13) Towns around Bosnia’s northern border with Croatia have become epicenters for migrants, media, and humanitarian organizations. But harsh realities wait on the trail to the European Union, and maps must be routinely distributed to warn those crossing the border about the risk of landmines. “Are Trump’s Climate Moves Imperiling National Security?” by Tyler Hicks (Aug. 14) When it comes to unraveling progress on fighting the climate catastrophe, the second Trump administration has picked up where it left off the first time around and ratcheted up the attack on clean energy. Experts worry Washington’s gifting China an opportunity to fill the void. “Deep Dive: Congressional Report Slams Trump’s Inaction on Russia” by Inkstick (Aug. 15) In a sharply worded report released on Aug. 5, 2025, Democratic staff from two key Senate committees accused the Trump administration of undermining US sanctions policy toward Russia and weakening efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
