Dear john,
This morning, Trump announced via Truth Social his latest proposal to eliminate mail-in ballots and voting machines for upcoming elections.
Let's be clear: calling mail-in voting "voter fraud" does nothing but diminish the faith Americans have in our electoral system.
In our very own state, despite cries from Conservatives about "rampant voter fraud," the Republican Attorney General has only found 33 "potential noncitizens who allegedly voted" in 2024. Out of 11.3 million ballots cast, that's 0.0003% of votes cast.
Yet should the President move forward with his proposal, that would've meant that for 2024, almost 10,700 El Pasoans would've had their mail-in votes not count.
As for voting machines, they help us quickly, safely, and accurately tally votes. In addition, almost all — 98 percent — of votes cast in the 2024 election had a paper record which election officials can then use to verify the accuracy of voting machines. You can read more about processes used to ensure the accuracy of our elections here.
I don't see how this proposal is anything but another barrier to prevent Americans from participating in our electoral process.
These last several elections have been some of the most secure and most accurate. Don't just take my word for it. CISA, the agency tasked with protecting our critical infrastructure has said that for 2024 "we have no evidence of any malicious activity that had a material impact on the security or integrity of our election infrastructure" and "our election infrastructure has never been more secure and the election community never better prepared to deliver safe, secure, free, and fair elections for the American people."
