It's time to look over the dove checklist and safety-check your shotgun, because the dove hunting this year looks excellent – populations are once again near record highs.
Opening day is Monday, Sept. 1 in the North and Central Zones, Sunday, Sept. 14 in the South Zone, and the daily bag limit is 15. For your hunt, you'll need a Migratory Game Bird endorsement and free HIP certification.
Check your Outdoor Annual for more dove regulation details. Be sure to review the dove identifier so you’ll recognize protected birds and avoid them. It looks like the temps may be moderate this fall, and it's going to be an exceptional season, so don't sit this one out!

Practicing safe firearm storage protects our kids, prevents accidents, and keeps guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.
Vehicle gun theft has become one of the most common ways for criminals to acquire firearms. If you're traveling, store your firearm in a case and out of sight, under the seat or in the trunk, someplace not accessible to passengers. Find more travel tips in the Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine story Follow These Three Tips for Firearm Safety.
Hunter Education teaches the safe handling of firearms at home, in transport and in the field. It works – Texas hunting-related accidents have gone down significantly since 1988, when Hunter Ed became mandatory. Today, anyone born after Sept. 1, 1971 must complete Hunter Education to hunt in Texas. Check online to confirm you're certified.
