John, Texas Republicans just got one step closer to rigging the 2026 midterms.
Texas Democrats - who fled their state to stop Gov. Greg Abbott’s mid-decade gerrymandering scheme - announced they will return home, giving the GOP the quorum they need to award themselves five new House seats without convincing a single voter to change their minds.
Plain and simple, this is not how a democracy should work. Politicians shouldn’t be allowed to redraw maps to shield themselves from blowback after they cut healthcare, public broadcasting, and food aid to pay for billionaire tax cuts.
This is just one part of a calculated strategy to dismantle the people’s voice in government and cement Trump’s authoritarian regime. But Common Cause is ready to fight back.
We are the national leader in the fight for fair maps and fair representation. For over 50 years, we’ve argued in court, written voting rights laws, and taken heat from both parties in our fight for elections where voters, not politicians, make the decisions.
And after taking a hard look at the state of our country, our redistricting experts released a set of fairness criteria that will let us evaluate countermeasures (like the ones in California and New York) to Texas’s gerrymander and ensure we’re putting our resources towards the most urgent threats. [1]
While the Trump regime is kidnapping our neighbors and silencing our voices, it would defy the values you and I share to call for unilateral political disarmament.
We’ve taken your voice to the halls of power to demand our elected leaders change their playbook, get out of their comfort zone, and do what it takes to build a democracy for all. In this moment, I hope you see that we need to demand the same of ourselves.
John, we need you to dig deep. This moment is demanding all of us to stretch a little further. If you’re able, rush $5 - or whatever you can afford - to fight for fair maps and against authoritarianism >>
