This summer, Texas House Democrats made a choice that few would have the courage to make. They broke quorum and walked out—not for themselves, but for every Texan whose voice would be silenced by an extreme plan to rig our elections.
When President Trump demanded a mid-decade rewrite of Texas’ congressional map—designed to erase the voting power of millions of Black, Hispanic, and Asian American Texans—Governor Greg Abbott and Republican leaders didn’t hesitate. They gave him exactly what he wanted.
But Texas House Democrats refused to be part of a brutal attack on minority voting rights and a corrupt assault on free and fair elections. They left the state to stop the scheme in its tracks, risking their careers, their safety, and their livelihoods.
They endured threats from both Gov. Abbott and Texas AG Ken Paxton to strip them of their seats, arrest warrants, personal fines, harassment of their families, and even intimidation from extremist groups. And yet—they held the line to shine a national spotlight on this attack on our democracy.
Because of their remarkable display of personal commitment and political courage:
* States like California, Illinois, and New York are taking steps to counterbalance Trump’s gerrymander.
* Republicans are so worried about their plan backfiring that they’ve filed a bill in Congress to end mid-decade redistricting for good.
* Even Republican leaders in other states have refused to follow Trump’s lead.
* The Texas map has been exposed as an illegal, racially discriminatory gerrymander in violation of the Voting Rights Act and the Constitution.
Their fortitude under pressure demonstrated that the will of the people is stronger than those who seek to silence it. And in doing so, the Texas House Democrats also exposed a deeper truth—the fundamental weakness of Trump, Abbott, and other Republicans, who will cheat and undermine free and fair elections just to hold on to power.
