Nothing to see here! Just the Secretary of Defense casually supporting the disenfranchisement of more than half the U.S. population!
Serious question: Is Pete Hegseth *trying* to disqualify himself from his job even more than he already has??
I know some of the reaction to this headline and these posts from Hegseth are going to be along the lines of: Relax. It’s not a big deal — he doesn’t actually mean that!
To that I say: Just like the GOP didn’t actually mean Roe should be overturned…?
I’m not interested in being told to calm down when a senior member of the United States government is echoing and praising an extreme anti-woman voice — and one that is explicitly calling for the end of women’s right to vote.
That’s not all Hegseth’s favorite pastor has said, by the way. He also said God created women “to make the sandwiches” and that homosexuality should be criminalized, among many other disgusting, offensive views.
This kind of bigoted extremism has in recent years been considered “fringe” — but news flash: when the U.S. Secretary of Defense is platforming and re-posting this stuff, it can no longer be thought of as outside the realm of possibility!
I’m writing to you about this not just to vent — although we all need to do some of that these days. I’m reaching out because this kind of rhetoric from those leading our country HAS to be met with a real response from those of us who see how horrific it is.
We don’t want to legitimize it, but we also can’t just shrug and say, “well, that was crazy!” and move on with our days.
My suggestion: We should respond by winning elections.
We should roll up our sleeves, capture every little bit of anger and outrage, and channel it into flipping the House next year and chipping away at the extreme GOP’s triple majority in Washington.
That’s how we make a real statement.
