Donald Trump wants to control the story – even if it means silencing the truth.
When the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published job reports and downward revisions that didn’t fit what he is claiming about the economy, Trump fired the director. Now he’s nominated a replacement: E.J. Antoni, a far-right economist at The Heritage Foundation with no business leading a federal data agency.
Antoni has publicly floated suspending the monthly jobs report entirely. That’s the report economists, journalists, and policymakers use to understand the state of the economy in real time – how many jobs were created, whether wages are rising, who’s being left behind.
It’s no secret that millions of families are struggling to make ends meet right now. If this nomination is confirmed the reality of that struggle could be consigned to the shadows. Trump and his loyalists would get to decide what version of the economy the country is told about – and what they hide.
And here’s something else: E.J. Antoni was at the January 6 rally that incited a violent attack on the United States Capitol! He didn’t break down doors – but he stood with the mob that tried to overturn a democratic election. That’s not someone who should be anywhere near a federal post, especially one built on objectivity and public trust.[1]
This isn’t just about jobs data. It’s about power, propaganda, and the truth.

Economists across the spectrum – Democratic, Republican, and independent – have raised serious concerns about Antoni’s nomination. Because when we lose public trust in economic data, we lose our ability to respond to crises, hold leaders accountable, and make informed decisions about the future.
There’s still time to stop this. But the Senate must act.
