How you can support your trans or nonbinary kid |
We live in a culture that far too often shames and threatens trans and nonbinary people. How can you help your trans or nonbinary kid feel safe, healthy, and confident when so many lawmakers are trying to erase them? |
Here are a few tips to help you get started:
-
Support them: Research shows that LGBTQ+ youth who have a supportive adult — most importantly a parent — have better mental health. Check out PFLAG for resources, and you may also want to find an LGBTQ+ friendly counselor or therapist for more support. Encourage your kid to check out imi.guide as well for more information.
Be their advocate at school: Work with your kid to push for better policies at school so they can feel safe and thrive. This could include things like respecting name/pronoun changes, bullying policies, bathroom policies, more inclusive sex education, and more. Check out GLSEN for resources.
Learn about gender-affirming care: Gender-affirming care can include social transition (like clothing, hairstyles, or name changes), mental health care, and — when appropriate and in consultation with qualified providers — medical care, like puberty blockers or hormone therapy. Educate yourself about gender-affirming care from trusted medical sources, like the American Academy of Pediatrics, your child’s pediatrician, or the staff at your nearest Planned Parenthood health center.
