John,
Throughout Social Security’s 90 years, we’ve strengthened and expanded the program so that it now includes people with disabilities, surviving spouses, and children. But instead of continuing to improve this critical program, the Trump administration is putting up barriers between us and our earned Social Security benefits.
Today, Social Security serves 70 million Americans, keeping 22 million out of poverty each year. But under the guise of “efficiency” the Trump administration is sabotaging Social Security.
Last month, Trump’s Treasury Secretary said the administration’s goal is the “backdoor privatization of Social Security”.1 Their sabotage includes pushing out 7,000 trained Social Security experts, resulting in field office closures and increased wait times in offices and on the tollfree phone line.
They’ve even announced that the 700,000 people who rely on paper checks will stop receiving them unless they apply for an exemption.2 But good luck explaining your exemption to the broken AI chatbot that SSA is using to replace trained experts.
Their goal is to break Social Security, then say it isn’t working so they can hand it over to Wall Street. We won’t let that happen.

We’re up against the biggest threat in Social Security’s 90 years. But we’ve beaten back attempts to cut and privatize the program before. We must do it again.
Thank you,

-- DEBORAH’S EMAIL --
John,
For 90 years, Social Security has been a collective promise: we pay in with every paycheck we earn, and our earned benefits will be there for us in retirement. It covers 70 million Americans each year and its modest benefits lift 22 million out of poverty―including over 900,000 children.1
Instead of proposals to cut Social Security―or sabotage it through cuts to Social Security staff―Congress should be strengthening and expanding Social Security for current and future generations.
But, due to the Trump administration pushing out 7,000 trained SSA staff―including 20% of staff from Social Security field offices―the system is buckling under the pressure as 10,000 Americans retire every day.2,3
Trump’s Social Security Commissioner has been reassigning field office staff to the toll free 1-800 phone line to help alleviate record wait times. But the president of the AFGE chapter that represents Social Security teleservice workers told National Public Radio that the reassignment of claim specialists away from field offices is “directly harmful to the public.”4
As call wait times surged, one of their first responses was to take down the call wait statistics on the SSA website. But Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA) had her staff make hourly calls to test the system and found the average wait time was one hour and 45 minutes. In 50 calls, more than half were never answered by an actual person, and the majority ended when, after being placed on hold, the call was dropped. Of the calls actually answered, about one-third had wait times of more than two hours.5
This week, along with allies, we helped send more than one hundred thousand messages to Congress demanding they rehire SSA staff and fully fund the agency. And today, CHN is proud to be a co-sponsor of the “Protect Our Checks” national day of action to defend Social Security. Click here to find a rally near you.
Instead of dismantling the Social Security Administration so conservatives can then hand our earned benefits over to Wall Street, we should be defending the most popular and successful social insurance program in our country’s history.
To strengthen and expand Social Security for another 90 years, rush a donation of $9, $90, or $900 today.
