We’ve got a real situation on our hands, John.
I emailed last week about how dangerous it is that Trump fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics for no other reason than not liking the numbers her office put out.
It just got worse, as Trump nominated E.J. Antoni, a Heritage Foundation economist and an author of Project 2025, as the new BLS chief. There’s absolutely no evidence he has the experience necessary to lead an office responsible for absolutely critical economic data. In fact, the only real evidence here is that he’s been put up for this job because he’s a Trump loyalist — just like every other person Trump’s put up for critically important jobs.
This is a serious mistake.
When Antoni comes before the Senate for a vote, I am an unequivocal no. I’m not going to sit by and let Trump destroy the integrity of essential and trusted institutions that businesses and markets here and around the globe depend on.
If you’re with me on this, please: Tell my colleagues that E.J. Antoni has no place leading the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We have to prevent Trump from doing even more damage to our economy, and that means voting against this nominee.
To be clear: Trump and senior members of his administration love to cite the BLS numbers when they’ve been convenient, or when they looked good. They only have a problem with those numbers because they’ve started accurately showing the damage Trump’s economic policies and tariffs have done to American businesses, workers, and families.
Trump said the BLS data was rigged against him — but he and his administration have not released any credible evidence of that accusation. That’s because it’s an obvious lie. We all know there’s no evidence. And now, rather than working to restore trust around these reports, Trump’s nominee has proposed suspending the monthly jobs report altogether.
This is a recipe for disaster, and we can’t let it happen.
But right now, this nomination isn’t getting anywhere near the attention it deserves. I need help making some noise about this. So, I’m humbly asking you:
Join me and tell the Senate that E.J. Antoni has no place leading the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Thank you,
Mark
