John,
Nothing you’re seeing in the news right now about redistricting is happening by accident.
What you’re seeing is the end result of decades — yes, decades — of work in a wider, cynical strategy to draw maps that lock in unearned power.
Take Texas, for example. It might feel like this power grab came out of nowhere. But back in 2003, conservatives took over the Texas state legislature and forced through a redistricting plan that heavily favored their party — and with their newfound majorities, they passed extreme policies from abortion bans to banning DEI programs in schools and colleges.
That extreme, mid-decade gerrymander 22 years ago hasn’t been in the headlines much since they pulled it off, but we know that extremist forces have been champing at the bit to go back to the gerrymandering playbook — at the expense of communities of color across Texas.
That’s exactly why All On The Line exists: To be just as dedicated to fighting for fair maps as extremists are to destroying them. We know that there are no off years when it comes to redistricting, because our opponents never take a year off trying to manipulate maps and take rights away from voters.
Right now, we’re at a critical inflection point. But we also know this fight continues, regardless of the outcome, in the states that are attempting mid-decade power grabs. That’s why we rely on supporters like you to continue this critical work.
