As a pediatrician, I’ve taken care of children on some of the worst days of their lives. I’ve treated kids with broken bones, severe asthma, life-threatening infections—and, yes, gunshot wounds. I’ve seen the trauma that gun violence causes, not just to the children who survive, but to their families, their classmates, and their communities. It’s heartbreaking. And what’s worse is that it’s preventable. That’s why it pisses me off to see politicians like Lindsey Graham continue to defend the gun lobby, while ignoring the real impact of gun violence in our communities. I’ve literally been at the bedside of children with bullet holes in them, missing parts of their skull and having to learn to walk and speak again. Lindsey Graham has repeatedly voted against background checks, opposed limits on high-capacity magazines, and done the NRA’s bidding over and over again. It doesn’t have to be this way. We can have safer schools, safer neighborhoods, and laws that put our children’s lives ahead of special interests. But to do that, we need new leadership in the U.S. Senate. Leadership that listens and acts in the best interest of the people that elected them, not the gun lobby. That’s why I’m running.
Together, we can do this. Dr. Annie Andrews
