ICE now has a larger budget than armies around the world – and it's paid for by you and me.

Here's what that level of funding costs us in real terms:

• Job Corps programs are gone
• Kids are kicked off of their Medicaid
• Rural doctors, teachers, and others will no longer benefit from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program

Trump and congressional Republicans are using ICE as a way to sow fear and intimidation: to scare Democratic leaders from taking bold action and to keep the rest of us in line. All the while, they're taking money out of our own wallets to fund it.

No matter your political leanings, a president with a masked-up, unidentifiable, private army that he uses at will is wrong, illegal, and anti-democratic.

So, I'm co-sponsoring legislation to put hard limits on ICE's power and authority. The Preventing Authoritarian Policing Tactics on America's Streets Act will put an end to secret police tactics like masks and unmarked cars.

In Congress, my job is to be a check on the power of the president and to do what's best for Oregon families and workers with every vote I take.

This law will take back our money and our power.
