Quorum Update 2
Special Session 2 has begun.
Yesterday, the Democrats continued their quorum-breaking, but hinted at an imminent return to Austin. As announced earlier in the week, the Legislature adjourned sine die and immediately began a new special session, allowing them to reset the clock for another 30 days in a new session.
It has been suggested that the Democrats intend to return by Monday, so that legislation can begin to move through the process.
Once this happens, the Congressional redistricting bill will pass. Our hope is that they will claim even more Democrat seats as a punishment for quorum-breaking, and to further solidify Trump's agenda after the midterms.
But more still can be done. We urge the Governor to add to the call a redistricting of the Texas House and Senate. While Governor Abbott and AG Paxton have filed lawsuits seeking to vacate the seats of the quorum-breakers, you have to fire on all cylinders if you want to win.
By redistricting the state legislature, we can guarantee the removal of several of the offending representatives, and in the process, get the Republican Party closer to a 2/3 majority in the House, which would altogether deny Democrats the ability to break quorum in the future.
Michael Quinn Sullivan of Texas Scorecard has reported that Democrat representatives are upset with Gene Wu, and that he would have few defenders, should a motion to expel him from the House be put forward. Should this be true, it would be another surefire way to remove more Democrats from office.
