[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Governor Newsom and California Democrats just announced that they are going to put new maps on the ballot for November in response to Trump and Texas Republicans’ plan to rig the 2026 election.

I’ll explain more in a moment, but if you already understand the stakes and want to help us fight back, I’m asking you to split a contribution between Governor Newsom’s ballot initiative campaign and my mobilization fund. Every dollar will be used to organize people and save democracy right now.

DONATE: [link removed]

Here’s the situation: Normally, states only redraw districts once every ten years — after the census.

Donald Trump told Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, to call a special session to redistrict Texas to create five more Republican seats. Trump and Republicans know that their billionaire tax cuts paid for by Medicaid cuts were a wildly unpopular disaster.

So they’re resorting to rigging elections and cheating.

It’s another authoritarian move by a wannabe dictator. It’s another step toward killing our democracy.

History tells us that dictators succeed and democracies die when the regime operates outside of the box and the opposition stays in the box.

Democracy will disappear if Republicans rig the rules while Democrats stand on the sidelines. So we have to fight and meet this moment.

There are limited opportunities to get this done, and California is our best option. There are proposed maps that could wipe out the entire 5-seat advantage Republicans have proposed in Texas, and it only goes into effect if Texas Republicans go through with their plan.

Making these maps a reality requires a ballot initiative and a special election to amend California’s constitution. Campaigns like this are extraordinarily expensive. And Republicans and their corporate and billionaire donors are already lining up massive sums of money to try to defeat our campaign.

So please, split a contribution of any amount between the campaign to redraw California’s maps and my mobilization fund. There is no better or more immediate way to fight back right now against Trump’s corruption and authoritarian agenda.

Look, in a perfect world, we would all observe the rules, only redraw the maps every 10 years and ban gerrymandering completely. Democrats in Congress tried to pass a bill in 2021 that would have done that, and Republicans blocked it.

But what’s happening in Texas is unprecedented, and this moment demands we take risks and use extraordinary tactics to preserve our democracy.

And if more red states follow Texas down this path, I will encourage more pro-democracy states like California to follow suit by responding in kind.

We won’t back down.

Every best wish,

Chris
