Republicans are quickly moving America toward an autocracy, and it should frighten all of us. What’s happening in Texas is a big part of the blueprint. Let us explain why:

Texas Governor Greg Abbott got the call from the Trump administration to pass a “ruthless” gerrymander. He didn't bat an eye. He used tragic flooding in the state to call a special session of the legislature, then made meeting Trump’s demand his top priority. Texas Republicans have now proposed an extremely gerrymandered map that strips Black and Latino voters of their right to be fairly represented.

Let’s be clear: In a democracy, the government is supposed to be elected by and accountable to the people. This map takes power away from people, with lawmakers instead getting to choose their constituents instead of the other way around. And let’s be completely clear — this is an all-out effort to steal the midterm elections.

The NDRC is fighting for an America where elections are free, maps are fair, and our democracy is truly representative. But creating this reality requires defeating GOP gerrymandering and rising autocracy. It requires bold pro-democracy champions on the frontlines — including those willing to fight back against the biggest anti-democracy forces. Will you join us?

Make no mistake: If Texas’s proposed congressional map passes, it would unfairly sway electoral results for years to come. It takes a map that is already being challenged by voters for violating the Voting Rights Act, and takes it to the extreme — in order to secure Republicans’ unearned power.

And they won’t stop in Texas.

This administration is putting pressure on other states to follow suit. Like President Obama warned, the U.S. is getting dangerously close to a Hungarian-style autocracy. From the gutting of public institutions to assaults on marginalized communities and attacks on the rule of law.
