John,

Yesterday marked the 90th anniversary of Social Security, one of the most important protections working people have ever won. For nine decades, it’s helped guarantee dignity in retirement, security for people with disabilities, and support for families when they need it most. Today, nearly 69 million Americans count on these benefits every single month.
But Social Security is under attack. AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler explained in a statement, the Trump administration’s budget bill is being praised as a “backdoor” to privatize Social Security. At the same time, Congress has stalled again and again on efforts to strengthen and expand benefits, while some members talk about raising the retirement age from 67 to 69.
Right here in Arizona, Rep. David Schweikert has openly suggested for cuts to both Social Security and Medicare. And Rep. Juan Ciscomani, despite his promises, hasn’t stood up to protect Medicaid. Meanwhile, since Trump took office, Social Security staffing has been slashed, making it harder for people to get information or file claims.
Working people pay Social Security taxes on every paycheck, while billionaires stop paying after the first $176,100 of their income. That’s not right.
This week, retirees and allies across the country took action. The Alliance for Retired Americans organized more than 50 events nationwide. Here in Arizona, the Arizona Alliance held “Silver Sit-Ins,” with more than 100 protesters in Tucson and 40 in Scottsdale standing shoulder-to-shoulder to set a powerful message that they won't allow cuts to the benefits workers earned.
As Arizona AARA President Linda Somo reminded us:
“We want everybody to have the same type of benefits from Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security that we’ve had.”
For 90 years, Social Security has been a promise to America’s workers. Now it’s on us to protect it.

Join a CWA District 7 Lumen & AT&T Partner Briefing

On May 21, Lumen announced plans to sell parts of its Quantum Fiber Network to AT&T, a deal that could harm service quality, cut off rural communities, and threaten union jobs. While AT&T would take over urban fiber, Lumen plans to keep outdated copper lines in rural areas—and shut them down within 7–10 years—without deploying fiber replacements. AT&T also intends to spin off these assets into a new company, likely with private equity partners, raising further concerns.

This coalition effort is pushing back to ensure communities and workers aren’t left behind. Join our partner briefing to learn more.

I Support Boeing Workers on Strike in St. Louis

3,200 highly-skilled IAM Union members at the Boeing facilities in St. Louis, St. Charles, Mo., and Mascoutah, Ill. voted on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, to reject a modified four-year labor agreement with Boeing and are now on strike.

Boeing has already enacted a contingency plan using non-union "replacement workers." IAM District 837 members on strike with Boeing deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation's defense.

Sign this solidarity pledge to show your support for the IAM Union members on strike, standing up for the value of their work and contribution to the company's huge success.

Letter: VA Secretary Douglas - Restore Veterans' Rights

The Department of Veterans Affairs ripped up the union contracts of more than 400,000 VA workers across the country last week as part of the biggest act of union-busting in American history.

America’s brave veterans and the dedicated union members who work at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are under attack. It’s time to stop the Trump administration’s assault on veterans’ health care and VA workers’ collective bargaining rights.

Send an email to Veterans Affairs Secretary Douglas Collins asking him to respect our veterans and keep his promises to VA workers by restoring these union members’ collective bargaining rights.

AZ AFL-CIO's Book Club: A New Chapter Begins!

We're back—and better than ever! The Arizona AFL-CIO Labor Book Club is now formatted as an end-of-the-month book review, offering fresh perspectives on thought-provoking reads that resonate with our movement.

📖 August's Book of the Month: The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson

About this book: In 'The Devil in the White City,' Erik Larson masterfully brings to life the events of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair by intertwining the experiences of architect Daniel H. Burnham and serial killer H.H. Holmes. Burnham faced immense challenges, including the death of his partner, while successfully creating the iconic "White City" for the fair, featuring notable figures like Buffalo Bill and Thomas Edison. Meanwhile, Holmes, who constructed a sinister hotel near the fairgrounds, exploited the event and his charm to lure numerous victims, showcasing the contrasting allure and darkness of 19th-century Chicago.

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey is a beautifully written novel set in 1920s Alaska, where Jack and Mabel, an aging couple, are struggling to build a life after years of heartbreak. One winter evening, they shape a child out of snow for fun, and soon after, a real, wild young girl named Faina begins appearing in the woods near their home. As she enters their lives, their world shifts. Isolation turns into connection, and grief into fragile joy.
Specifically, for or union working parents, this story may resonate deeply. It’s about trying to raise something meaningful in the middle of hardship, whether it’s a family, a future, or a life built on your own terms. Jack’s fear of being seemingly forced into the coal mines is a quiet but powerful reminder of what many working people know all too well. The tension between survival and autonomy. Like organizing, like parenting, this book is about forging hope in harsh places, even when the outcome is uncertain.

After Project Blue, Environmentalists Could Learn Much From Unions

"Unions have always led the charge in progressive causes. Why downplay their legitimate concerns? Why not tap into their knowledge of how to build collective power? Liberals stand a lot to learn from unions, who know how to organize, rather than redundantly, ineffectively mobilizing the same folks over and over again."

Arizona Is Still Guilty of Unconstitutional School Underfunding, Court Rules

"At the core of Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Dewain Fox’s ruling is that chronic underfunding for both school maintenance and short-term capital needs has created a two-tiered education system in Arizona. The result is that school districts in wealthier areas with higher property tax bases can supplement inadequate state funding with voter-approved bonds, while those in poor areas cannot."
