Hey, John!
This past weekend — which also marked the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act — When We All Vote brought the energy, the conversation, and the call to action to the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, and the vibes were unmatched. We were joined by Valerie Jarrett, Mara Brock Akil, and Gia Peppers for a powerful dialogue on what it takes to move the needle for change. As Valerie reminded us, “Change has never been easy — but it has always been possible when we come together.”
We weren’t there to shape anyone’s view on who to vote for or what to care about. We were there to create space for people to claim ownership of our democracy through Black stories and shared experiences. And to remember that culture and civic engagement go hand in hand.
Now, let’s look at what is on the horizon for When We All Vote:
⭐ Poll Worker Recruitment Day may be over, but there’s still time to step up. Our democracy depends on everyday people like us. Poll workers are the frontline defenders of our elections — making sure every vote counts and everyone can make their voices heard. Signing up is simple. Get started today!
⭐ Tuesday, August 26th, marks the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the constitutional right to vote in 1920. It was a victory in the fight for gender equality — but it’s important to remember that many Black women, along with other women of color, were still denied that right for decades due to racist voter suppression laws. For Black women, this anniversary is a reminder of our resilience. We have always been at the forefront of the fight for voting rights — from Ida B. Wells to Fannie Lou Hamer to the countless organizers of today. Our votes are powerful, and our voices continue to shape the future.
⭐ Our National Voter Registration Week of Action is almost here! Now is the time to lock in. Our power is in our participation — and our voices will shape the future. Let’s get ready, stay ready, and lock in for Election Day. And stay tuned — we’ve got resources and ways for you to take action coming soon.
Til next time,
— Beth
