I was in New Brunswick this week at Rutgers University to host a roundtable with food safety experts and announce new legislation that would require an independent review of chemicals in food products. As kids head back to school, parents expect the food they put in their lunch boxes or that they get from the cafeteria and vending machines to be safe, but a loophole in federal law allows food additives into the food we eat without sufficient oversight. My legislation will close this loophole and require manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they put in our food are safe for families and Americans across the country.

Holding FEMA Accountable

I sent a letter to Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem demanding she reverse her decision to reassign half of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) human resources and security employees to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for 90 days – in the middle of peak hurricane season.

It’s an extremely shortsighted and dangerous decision that will gut FEMA’s ability to respond to hurricanes and other real disasters. This comes in the aftermath of the Trump Administration firing and pushing into early retirement one-third of FEMA’s workforce, crippling its ability to respond to back-to-back disasters. Now, as FEMA’s workforce is stretched thin and unable to manage numerous ongoing disasters, Noem is manufacturing an immigration crisis at the expense of the communities she is supposed to help.

I urged her to immediately reverse this misguided decision and bring key employees back to FEMA before it’s too late.

Save Social Security

Thanks to Democrats, Social Security has kept millions of seniors out of poverty for 90 years. Now, Trump and the Republicans in Congress are trying to break it – cutting Social Security services with fewer offices, employees, and phone lines, and making it more difficult for seniors to receive the benefits that they have earned.

House Democrats are fighting back to stop these cuts. We are working to protect and strengthen Social Security, so there can be more money in the pockets of today’s seniors and future generations

I toured the active construction sites at Middlesex College and Thomas Edison Park in Edison for the new County Innovation Magnet School, the Multipurpose Community Venue, Middlesex College Student center, and the Destination sports complex.

Middlesex County is leading the way in innovation, education, and recreation, and I am proud to help secure the federal funds to make this project a reality.

Trump’s Assault on Solar

Last week, Trump’s EPA announced it is illegally ripping up the Solar for All program and withholding money intended to help communities install solar energy. It’s just another senseless attack on climate action that will ultimately hurt regular people and force them to pay more in energy bills.

I sent a letter to the EPA Administrator demanding that he stop violating the law and immediately release obligated funding that was already set aside for communities – money that was promised to benefit New Jersey households and businesses across the state. I’m fighting to make sure this funding stays put.
