In the latest edition of the So What ([link removed]) , DQC’s Jennifer Bell-Ellwanger and Paige Kowalski are digging into the recent removal of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner, and why it’s more than just a staffing change.

Independent agencies like the BLS build trust in the data they publish by promoting transparency, ultimately enabling leaders at every level to access quality, consistent data that they can use to guide their decisionmaking. Transparent data doesn’t always paint a rosy picture, but leaders can’t solve problems they can’t see. Without consistent access to trusted workforce data, states can’t ensure they are building and sustaining pathways through education and employment that work for people.

This moment represents another step in a pattern of minimizing the federal role for data. And states can’t afford to lose out on quality workforce data as a result.
