WorkGhislaine Maxwells Petition to the Supreme Court - The New Yorker (No paywall) The Supreme Court has been busy during its summer break, issuing decisions on emergency petitions that have enabled President Donald Trump to gut the Department of Education, deport people to South Sudan, and fire swaths of federal employees and agency heads. The Justices have so far kept clear of the revival of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, which has managed to wobble the MAGA movements support for Trumpbut, when they return to considering ordinary petitions this fall, one awaits that invites them into the matter. The petition is from Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted, in 2021, of federal crimes related to enabling Epsteins sexual abuse of underage girls, and who was then sentenced to twenty years in prison. WorkCountries deadlocked on plastic production and chemicals as talks on a global treaty draw to a close Negotiations on a global treaty to end plastic pollution are drawing to a close Thursday. Nations remain deadlocked over whether to tackle the exponential growth of plastic production. A draft of the treaty released Wednesday wouldn't limit plastic production or address chemicals used in plastic products. Instead it's centered on proposals where there's broad agreement about problematic plastic products, redesign and better waste management. Powerful oil and gas-producing nations and the plastics industry oppose production limits. Norway's minister for climate and the environment says the current text is unacceptable and the country's representatives won't leave Geneva with just any treaty.
