The Mississippi state flag, the only flag in the United States with the confederate battle emblem, may come down within the next 24 hours.

As of now, a majority of Mississippi’s elected officials have signaled their support for a new flag that brings us together. Up and down the ballot, Democrats and Republicans are calling for a new flag. Mississippi’s Republican governor even said that he would sign a bill with the new design.

In fact, we’d heard from everyone about this issue — except for my opponent, Cindy Hyde-Smith. All week, I have been calling her out on this and demanding accountability.

Finally, this morning, she said something about the flag change, but it was a mush-mouthed, duplicitous statement. Honestly, I wouldn’t even call it a statement. Hyde-Smith’s campaign literally just copied and pasted an identical statement they’d provided in the past that does not say if she supports changing the flag.

The only reason Hyde-Smith finally said something about the Mississippi flag was because she finally caved under the pressure of progress in Mississippi. We must keep up the momentum.

Will you rush $10 or more to my campaign right now? The biggest fundraising deadline of our campaign is in just 3 days — and I’m counting on our grassroots movement to help keep us strong so we can keep fighting for a better, brighter Mississippi and defeat Cindy Hyde-Smith.

I’ve been clear about how I feel about the Mississippi state flag. We must bring it down — now. The confederate battle emblem is a symbol of hate that harkens back to chattel slavery in America, a period where it was okay for one human being to own another human being.

We all live under the same flag, and I believe that we must pick a new design. A lot of good ideas have been suggested. Whether it’s a magnolia, or a state seal, we must choose a new design that better represents our great state.

Let’s be clear: We’re in the middle of a make-it-or-break-it moment here in Mississippi. There is a groundswell of support to take down the Mississippi flag that is simply unprecedented. In all my years being a proud Mississippian, we have never seen this much momentum behind a new design. This is our chance to make it happen once and for all.

Please chip in a few dollars, whatever you can afford right now, to help our campaign keep the pressure on Cindy Hyde-Smith and keep fighting for a Mississippi flag that ALL can be proud of.

Stay tuned for more updates from me. And thank you for everything you do.
