Republican Senator John Cornyn is coming after me on Twitter, John.
Last week, my colleagues and I on the House Oversight Committee sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. We’re asking questions and calling out how, at Cornyn’s request, the FBI is being used to intimidate and harass Texas lawmakers who broke quorum to fight Abbott’s corrupt, racist redistricting scheme.
These lawmakers were doing what democracy demands — engaging in political protest against injustice, and defending voting rights.
But Cornyn? He wants to criminalize that protest. He wants to weaponize law enforcement against people fighting for democracy. And he's abusing his power to do it.
He took to Twitter to say — directly to me — that it’s okay to use law enforcement to go after Democrats for standing up — even though no federal crimes were committed.
So Senator Cornyn, I have something to say directly to you, too:
John. We know each other. You were one of the only Republicans to reach out to me when I joined Congress.
I mistakenly thought you were the kind of patriot who would not cower to Trump and his abuses. You are causing long-term harm to American democracy by encouraging federal law enforcement to arrest lawmakers over political disagreements. Do not further disgrace yourself by doing what you know is wrong — you are likely to lose to Ken Paxton either way. Please do not further taint your legacy, and the end of your long career, this way.
- Congressman Greg Casar
John, lawmakers like Cornyn don’t scare me or intimidate me. If anything, they make me fight harder against the corruption they enable.
But I can’t do this alone. This fight against corruption and authoritarianism needs all of us organizing, speaking out, and standing together.
Cornyn thinks he can intimidate us to stop speaking out. Let’s show him how wrong he is.
In solidarity,
Greg Casar
