John, I’ve been to Ukraine multiple times since Putin started this illegal war in 2022.
I have seen the damage. I have met with Ukrainian fighters and their wounded at a military hospital. I’ve listened to everyday Ukrainians who witnessed horrible things.
Vladimir Putin is a war criminal who must be held accountable for the atrocities Russia has committed in Ukraine. It is no show of strength to allow him to fly into the United States, to land here, and negotiate with our president — and especially not if the outcome is to negotiate away Ukraine’s sovereignty in a dangerous attempt at appeasement.
If Trump invited him here with no concessions extracted — with nothing in return — it makes us look weak.
Frankly, it’s disgusting. It’s another needless abdication of America’s role as a champion for democracy on the world stage. It empowers people like Putin and puts our allies at a disadvantage. That makes us less safe.
Ukraine must win this war. Not just for their own sake but for ours, too. We can’t allow unchecked Russian aggression to threaten a broader conflict, because if that happens, it is American troops who will be called up to stop it.
I continue to stand firm with Ukraine and our European allies, and I’m not afraid to say so.
Far too much is at stake here to do any less.
Thank you,
Mark
