Report: D.C. Mayor escapes to Martha’s Vineyard amid Trump city takeover
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser traveled to Martha's Vineyard [ [link removed] ] on Thursday for a "family commitment,” according to Fox News, just days after President Trump federalized the city's police department on Monday following high-profile crimes.
Trump assumed emergency control of DC's Metropolitan Police Department under the Home Rule Act, deploying hundreds of National Guard troops and federal agencies including FBI, DEA, and ATF for a comprehensive law enforcement crackdown.
Despite claims that overall crime has decreased, DC has the highest violent crime lethality rate among 17 major US cities, with a 38% increase in lethality in 2024 compared to 2018 and a 341% jump since 2012, according to a Council on Criminal Justice study.
Bowser criticized Trump's federalization as "an intrusion on our autonomy" during a Tuesday town hall, calling it an "authoritarian push" and urging the community to "protect our home rule" while hoping for a Democratic House to serve as a "backstop."
