It’s harder to be a Democrat than a Republican, John.
Why?
Because it’s always more difficult to make government work than it is to tear it apart.
Republicans know that. In fact, they count on it.
They’ve spent decades breaking our institutions so people lose faith in them — and then they turn around and say “See? Government doesn’t work.”
Donald Trump doesn’t even pretend to try.
He governs like a wannabe dictator because he has no idea how to be a president. He pushes half-baked executive orders that get struck down in court, bypasses Congress, and leans on his handpicked Supreme Court to rubber-stamp his worst ideas.
Democrats? We actually want government to work for the people.
That means we have to do the hard, messy, complicated work of governing. Passing laws. Building coalitions. Getting results that last.
And here’s the problem — right now, we don’t have nearly enough leaders with the skill, experience, and grit to do that work for the long haul. That’s why we have to start young.
Just like Joe Biden started young. Just like FDR, LBJ, and the most effective leaders in our history started young. If we want another generation of prolific leaders who can defeat the far-right, we have to elect them now so they can build that experience.
But running for office has never been more expensive — and the young, progressive leaders we need don’t have the corporate donors or billionaire backers the GOP can call up on speed dial.
