John,

Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, a day that symbolizes how far into the new year black women have to work to make what white, non-Hispanic men made at the end of the previous year.

Black women are paid only $.61 for every $1.00 a white man makes.

The gender pay gap is a prime example of the systemic racism and discriminaton that persists in our country today.

Women — particularly black women — are overrepresented in low-wage jobs and underrepresented in high-wage jobs.

Even in jobs where women make up the majority, they’re still underpaid relative to men.

The pay gap hurts black women, and women of color, every single day.

According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, the poverty rate for working single mothers would be cut in half if the pay gap were closed and 2.5 million children would be lifted out of poverty.

If we’re fighting for a just, equitable, and fair society, this issue has to be at the top of everyone’s agenda.

When Eva’s in Congress, she will fight to pass bills like the Paycheck Fairness Act, which will help close the gender pay gap by addressing loopholes in the Equal Pay Act of 1963.

If you want to help bring awareness to Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, you can share Eva’s post and tweet using #BlackWomensEqualPay and #BlackWomenCantWait.
