More than twenty years ago, I served in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, working with military and civilian officials to deliver humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.

We were deployed at a time of tremendous uncertainty—when families were just beginning to emerge from decades of fear and suffering under Saddam Hussein.

I’ll never forget the people I met. They had lost so much, but they carried themselves with strength, dignity, and hope.

It left a lasting impression on me and deepened my belief that public service must be about empathy. We need to look beyond numbers, beyond programs, and beyond headlines to focus on the people whose lives are shaped by the work we do.

That’s how I lead today as Maryland’s Attorney General.

* When we defend reproductive rights, I see the people who are counting on us to protect their freedom.

* When we challenge unlawful actions in Washington, I think about the most vulnerable residents who would feel the impact first and hardest.
