Rumors about Tren de Aragua ([link removed]) are rife.

News outlets and authorities around the Americas have decried the group’s expansion.

The gang has been called “an invading criminal army” by US lawmakers, as well as a tool of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to “invade” the United States.

In February, the US government named it a foreign terrorist organization. Other countries have followed his example, and Trump has used the group as justification for his anti-immigration policies.

Tren de Aragua’s presence in North America is often exaggerated, but the group’s expansion in South America has had a profound impact on organized crime dynamics.

It began as a prison gang in Venezuela, led by Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, alias “Niño Guerrero,” who has been on the run since 2023.
