Dear John,

Last week, we asked you a simple question: Is it time for Democrats to gerrymander?

The response we received was overwhelming. It’s clear that the pro-democracy movement has strong feelings about what the GOP is trying to do in Texas, and what Democrats need to do about it.

Over 95% of you said we need to redistrict in retaliation if we want to win in 2026. As members of The Union, you probably want to agree with the 5% that are against gerrymandering. 30% of you said Democrats should make a pledge to end partisan gerrymandering as a condition of retaliating in the short term. But almost two-thirds of you, 65%, think Democrats need to do whatever it takes to rebuild our democracy now. 

So what does that mean? It’s time to get to work in California and New York.

If Republicans don’t lay off in Texas, this is our plan to even things out. The first 6 months of Trump’s second term have been so bad that MAGA knows they can’t win reelection. We won’t let them hold on to power by cheating. 

It’s time we all unite with one common goal in mind: win the midterms, hold Trump accountable, and rebuild the greatest democracy in the world.
