Meet Ted Maack—a California native and commercial driver with more than 25 years of experience.
In 2022—after living in the Golden State for more than 50 years—Ted moved to Wyoming seeking a quieter life away from the hustle and bustle of the San Francisco Bay Area.
In Wyoming, he continued his career as a self-employed commercial driver and began supplementing his earnings through rideshare and delivery apps.

California’s out-of-state restrictions aren’t just inconvenient—they're blatantly unconstitutional.
The Framers knew all too well that these kinds of arbitrary barriers led only to economic quagmires, disrupting interstate commerce and kneecapping individual liberty without serving any legitimate purpose.
Thankfully, Ted’s fighting back with a federal lawsuit—seeking to reclaim his right to earn a living and protect the rights of countless Americans who travel between states to do the same.
You can learn more about Ted’s story on our case page—and check out the complaint we filed yesterday in federal court for more details on the merits of our challenge.
For Ted, this fight is about more than just being able to earn extra money while visiting back home.
Ridesharing allows him to step away from his business in Wyoming—to care for his ailing mother hundreds of miles away—and still afford to put food on the table.
It’s also about the fundamental constitutional principle that states shouldn’t be in the business of building economic walls against their neighbors.
If you’ve fallen victim to this sort of economic protectionism, please consider submitting your case to our team for review. As a reminder, all Pacific Legal Foundation clients are represented 100% free of charge.
Thank you for your support. Stay tuned for more updates on Ted’s fight and others like it.
