Former Prescott Man to Stand Trial for First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct

*LANSING* – Yesterday, James Carter, 62, formerly of Prescott but most recently residing in Georgia, was bound over to stand trial in the 1st Circuit Court in Hillsdale County on four counts of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, a potential life sentence, and two counts of Accosting a Child for Immoral Purposes, a 4-year felony, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Carter is accused of sexually assaulting a minor and accosting her, along with another victim, for immoral purposes in 2008. He was initially charged by the Hillsdale County Prosecuting Attorney's Office in August of 2011.

Carter was arraigned and extradited to Hillsdale County in March [ [link removed] ] by the U.S. Marshals Service to face these charges as part of Operation Survivor Justice [ [link removed] ]. The Operation is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Attorney General, local county prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service to locate, apprehend, and return to Michigan fugitive offenders with outstanding sexual assault warrants.

“Operation Survivor Justice has proven that those who flee criminal allegations cannot evade accountability by crossing state lines,” said Nessel at the time of the arraignment. “I am proud to partner with the U.S. Marshals Service and county prosecutors across Michigan on this important work and remain committed to seeing justice delivered for these victims.”

Carter will next appear before the 1st Circuit Court on August 18.
