Lansing Man Arraigned on 17 Felony Charges for Disarming, Shooting Police in April 2024

*LANSING* – On Friday, August 8, Andrial Ortiz, 30, of Lansing, was arraigned in the 54A District Court in Lansing on 17 felony charges following an incident on April 10 of last year when Ortiz allegedly disarmed multiple officers from the Lansing Police Department, and shot one officer in the leg. 

On April 10, 2024, officers from the Lansing Police Department (LPD) conducted a traffic stop on Andrial Ortiz’ vehicle. In the rear parking lot of an apartment complex near the intersection of Holmes Road and Pleasant Grove Road, officers conducted a search of Ortiz’ vehicle with his consent.  Upon finding suspected narcotics in the vehicle, officers initiated an arrest of Ortiz, who allegedly resisted and struggled against multiple officers on foot and on the ground. During the struggle, it is alleged that Ortiz attempted to remove one officer’s service pistol from its holster and then removed another officer’s service pistol from the officer’s belt. The gun was quickly recovered by another officer, removing it from Ortiz’ grip.  

As the struggle continued, Ortiz allegedly again disarmed an officer, and fired once— shooting an LPD officer in the leg. At this time, another LPD officer fired at Ortiz’ leg, striking him once below the knee, and the pistol was removed from his possession. Medical attention was applied at the scene, and Ortiz was transported to a local hospital, surviving his injury. The Department of Attorney General reviewed the shooting by the Lansing Police officer and found their use of force justified under the law. 

“Disarming an officer is an incredibly reckless act; one that gravely endangers officers on-scene and all nearby members of the public,” said Nessel. “My office is committed to ensuring police can do their jobs as safely as possible, and we will work to hold this individual accountable in the courts.” 

Ortiz was arraigned Friday before Magistrate Laura Millmore on: 


* One count of Resisting & Obstructing a Police Officer Causing Serious Impairment, a 15-year felony, 
* Two counts of Disarming a Police Officer, a 10-year felony, 
* One count of Attempting to Disarm a Police Officer, a 5-year felony, 
* Two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a 5-year felony, 
* One count of Resisting & Obstructing a Police Officer Causing Injury, a 4-year felony, 
* Two counts of Resisting & Obstructing a Police Officer, a 2-year felony, and 
* Eight counts of Felony Firearm, Second Offense, a 5-year felony upon which convicted persons must be sentenced to consecutive terms of incarceration. 

Ortiz has been charged as a Habitual Fourth Offender. He was granted a $100,000 bond. 

Ortiz will next appear before the Court for a probable cause conference on August 22, and a preliminary examination on these charges is scheduled for August 29 before Judge Cynthia Ward.
