Dear john,
Today we celebrate 90 years of Social Security. When President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law on August 14, 1935, he created an economic lifeline for millions of Americans facing poverty during the Great Depression and millions more in the decades since.
Yet this vital program is facing some of its greatest threats today from policies implemented by Republicans and DOGE. There's been harmful staffing cuts to the Social Security Administration (SSA) as a result of DOGE's policies. An appeals court this week ruled that DOGE can access social security numbers and other sensitive data. And just two weeks ago, Secretary of the Treasury Bessent explained how provisions in the "Big, Beautiful" bill are "in a way, a backdoor for privatizing Social Security."
Over 132,000 El Pasoans rely on Social Security, including 100,000 seniors. Despite constant attacks on Social Security, El Pasoans can rest assured I will always fight to ensure every generation has the same dignity, opportunities, and support from the federal government that previous generations were afforded.
