Dear AFSCME Family,
Ninety years ago, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. It was 1935 and the country was in the midst of the Great Depression.
Social Security has been improved to benefit more people. Today, more than 70 million people — one in five Americans — receive Social Security benefits.
Social Security is a promise for those who retire after a lifetime of hard work. And it has stood the test of time.
But it is under attack.
The administration has shut down Social Security offices and laid off many of the workers who keep Social Security running. This has left beneficiaries without the help they need. The administration has also put people's private information in jeopardy by giving Elon Musk's unvetted DOGE minions unprecedented access to our Social Security data.
As if this weren’t enough, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently hinted that the administration might be looking for ways to privatize Social Security. That would expose our retirement savings to market risks and jeopardize the financial security of retirees.
Current and future generations deserve peace of mind in retirement. Sign the petition to show your support for Social Security.
In Solidarity,
AFSCME
