Hi,
Our latest article [ [link removed] ] covering the people and places tied up in the US arms industry dives into a first-ever, Mormon-led divestment campaign that is targeting the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ investment manager — a high-impact target since the church is believed to have the largest investment portfolio of any religious organization in the country.
The campaigners with the LDS Committee of the Olive Tree Solidarity Coalition spent months approaching people in and around the Brigham Young University campus and nearby Utah Valley University. By July, they got 250 of them to send “letters of lamentation” to Ensign Peak. The postcards call on the fund to divest from weapons manufacturers Lockheed Martin and Boeing and other companies that supply the Israeli military. For example:
A second group of anti-genocide campaigners is targeting the hearts and minds of everyday Mormons, with protests and sidewalk preaching in downtown Salt Lake City proclaiming: “Our God tells us to ‘renounce war and proclaim peace’! The United States is funding this genocide. Children are being slaughtered, and men and women. This is something we should be standing against.”
The collective, Mormons with Hope for a Better World, is quickly gaining adherents. Nathan McLaughlin, an organizer, told Inkstick that “I would not be surprised if we’re one of the fastest growing left-wing organizations in the state of Utah.”
Is targeting the LDS church a quixotic goal for anti-genocide campaigners? Yes and no. Our story [ [link removed] ] has more context about the extraordinary and influential disarmament stance that the church took against a nuclear weapon called the MX missile during the Cold War following pressure and persuasion campaigns, plus other cultural and political changes afoot within the church.

Inkstick readers will know that we closely cover the arms industry in Utah, a key node on the map of US nuclear weapons production due to hosting several facilities that produce the new Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile. I’ll be on KRCL radio next week discussing this piece, and if you’re in Utah, you can read it in print soon in the pages of our local partner, the Salt Lake City Weekly.
