Hello John ,
The Great Salt Lake is slipping toward its 2022 record low. The South Arm has dropped to 4,192 feet which is the threshold where Utah warns of “serious adverse effects” to our economy, environment, and health. Below this, brine shrimp and flies collapse, mineral extractors cut back, and toxic dust storms become more likely. Without emergency action, the lake could hit a new record low by 2026.
That’s why we’re gathering passionate advocates, leading experts, and community voices at the Great Salt Lake People’s Summit, Saturday, Aug. 23, 9 AM–2 PM, SLCC Miller Campus in Sandy.

The day kicks off with lively networking and tabling, then an opening plenary with updates from Brad Parry of the NW Band of Shoshone, Dr. Bonnie Baxter with the Great Salt Lake Institute, Dr. Brian Moench with Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment, and Zach Frankel with the Utah Rivers Council. The plenary wraps up with a heavyweight panel that will dig into state and institutional efforts for the lake – where we stand, what’s been accomplished, and where we need to go.
After lunch, choose from breakouts on toxic dust science, wetlands and wildlife, the lake’s economic stakes, or crafting a movement-ready “toxic dust bowl” pitch. We’ll close with Reclaiming Bear River , the inspiring story of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation reclaiming their ancestral homeland.
Part summit, part strategy session, part rallying cry, this is the moment to show up for the lake. This event is free and open to the public and lunch is provided. Join us!

One more thing to have on your radar:
The EPA is gutting the 2009 Endangerment Finding and rolling back vehicle pollution standards—an anti-science move that hands the oil industry a license to pollute, threatens climate and public health protections, worsens air quality and disease risks, and drives up costs for drivers while accelerating climate damage. Let’s flood the line with comments.
