Hi friend,

We’ve just heard that UK-based oil trader BB Energy is suing one of the poorest countries in the world, South Sudan, through the High Court in London.

It’s jaw-dropping that a country so devastated by years of conflict and at the sharp end of the climate crisis could be targeted in this way by lenders. South Sudan is in the midst of a humanitarian disaster. 9 million people face acute hunger [1]. Now its government is being pursued in the courts over debt payments it cannot afford.

friend, will you help shame BB Energy by calling on the company to drop the court case?
Yes! I’ll email BB Energy now! ([link removed])

This isn’t the first time one of South Sudan’s lenders has taken them to court in London. Earlier this year, the high court ordered the East African country to pay their biggest commercial lender $657m [2]. That’s nearly half the government's revenue!

Now oil trader BB Energy, which made nearly $300m in profit last year, is following their example. [3]

Our broken global system is allowing private lenders to sue countries in turmoil – and UK law is the tool they’re using to do it. Ultimately, it’s the people of countries like South Sudan who will pay the price.

Will you take two minutes to email oil trader BB Energy and call on them to drop the court case against South Sudan?

We’ve been campaigning for a new debt justice law that would stop lenders from using UK law to sue countries in debt crisis. Thousands of campaigners like you have signed petitions, written to, and even met with your MPs to demand action. This is a prime example of why we need the government to act. We need to make sure lenders like BB Energy know we won’t let them get away with it.

In solidarity,

Wiz, Eva, Tim, and everyone at Debt Justice
