Senators Ed Markey and Elissa Slotkin, along with Representative Marilyn Strickland, just reintroduced the Gun Violence Prevention Research Act. This bill dedicates $50 million a year to CDC research that can save lives.
The NRA and their cronies know that funding research into gun violence prevention will expose their dangerous lie that guns make us safer. The truth is bad for business. As Rep. Strickland put it:
“Make no mistake: gun violence is preventable. Republicans actively choose to watch children, mothers, fathers, and Americans gunned down in deference to the gun lobby.”
This bill is urgent. Under Trump, the CDC’s dedicated gun violence research team was dismantled and federal funding for prevention programs was gutted. Now, we have a chance to rebuild that capacity — but the gun lobby will fight it every step of the way.
