At a health center in the Farchana camp in Chad, Amina had to spend the better part of the day traveling to and waiting for a prenatal consultation. She arrived early in the morning and waited several hours before she could be seen.

“There are too many women and not enough midwives,” Amina told UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Last year, the camp’s health center had 32 staff members. Today, there are only ten left to care for more than 60,000 people.

Fewer trained staff. Dwindling essential medicines. Inadequate health facilities. A drastic loss in funding. As Sudanese refugees cross the border into Eastern Chad to flee violence, needs continue to grow and resources continue to decline.

“I can no longer find certain medications that we used to receive without any problems,” Amina said. “I'm in my seventh month of pregnancy, and these medications were always available before. Health workers tell us it's because there isn't enough funding."

UNFPA continues to support the affected populations in Chad by providing staff, equipment, care kits, and training in sexual and reproductive health. Yet, the country already has one of the highest maternal death rates in the world, with 748 women dying per every 100,000 live births , a situation that is likely to deteriorate given the decline in resources.
