ICYMI John: Trump is using Washington, D.C. as testing grounds for his plan to occupy Black-led cities and turn the military into his personal police force.
Trump deployed the National Guard in D.C. and took direct control of the city’s police department. So where do we go from here? How do we protect our people?
One of the reasons D.C. is so at risk is that the District is STILL not considered a state.
If D.C. were a state, an Attorney General or Governor could take legal action to defend District residents and defy Trump’s tyranny.
Black Lives Matter is proud to support DC statehood – will you add your name to join us in calling for D.C. statehood?
D.C. is filled with Black and Brown communities who have endured generations of over-policing, mass incarceration, and state violence, all without adequate representation in Congress.
Residents of D.C. pay more federal taxes per capita than any state, and have a larger population than Wyoming AND Vermont. It’s also worth noting the District is substantially Blacker than both Wyoming and Vermont, which is one of the driving reasons it’s being targeted by Trump.
Black and Brown people in D.C. have been denied a voice for hundreds of years, and now they’re facing federal military occupation.
History has shown us that when those in power turn the force of the state against their own people, especially Black people, immigrants, and the poor, more violence is sure to come. History and the struggle of our ancestors have also shown that resistance works when we organize, protect each other, and refuse to be silent.
We are fighting back with everything we have, but we cannot do it alone. We need you with us, John.
Protect D.C. residents from Trump’s authoritarian overreach and military occupation. Show your support for D.C. statehood right now by adding your name.
In resistance,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
