Newsletter of the Goethe-Institut Washington

Dear Friends,

We are back from our vacations, and we hope you are back from yours, too - and ready for our lineup of early fall programming! We have tons to offer next week alone: Jazz in the Basement featuring the Nicole Connelly Quartet, the third and last installment of our Spotlight: Berlin theater series, an author talk and book reading with German author Olga Grjasnowa, and the final film screening in our Kino-Q film series. Stop by our space before Labor Day weekend and say hello!

School is starting soon - for teens and adults who want to add a little German to their curriculum, we are offering fall courses at special rates for early registration. Educators may also take advantage of the resources at our film archive, which is located at the Goethe-Institut Boston.

Spotlight: Berlin - Look Who's Back (Er ist wieder da), by Timur Vermes

In 21st-century Berlin, a man with an unmistakable mustache appears. More than sixty years after his supposed demise, the "Führer" is stranded in the present, causing great confusion among those around him – and within himself. Timur Vermes’s irreverent and provocative Look Who’s Back (Er ist wieder da) is the third play featured in the Spotlight: Berlin series. The staged reading of this unrestrained satire on media takes place on Monday, August 26 at 6:30 pm.

Film & Discussion | Tuesday, August 27, 6:30 PM

Kino Q: The AIDS Trilogy, Pt. III: The Fire Under Your Ass (Feuer unterm Arsch) (1990)

The third film of The AIDS Trilogy, directed by Rosa von Praunheim, is dedicated to the German gay community, who is not interested in "Safe Sex" - much less the safer sex "with Mother Earth," which Allen Ginsberg envisioned for dealing with a planet contaminated by AIDS. In Berlin, the gay capital of Germany, Praunheim encounters a persistent party atmosphere and attitudes which reject the notion of safe sex. Guided by Dr. Richard Wetzell of the German Historical Institute, the film screening and discussion take place on Tuesday, August 27, at 6 pm. There will also be a special reception honoring the closing of our Queer as German Folk exhibition.

City of Jasmine (2019) by Olga Grjasnowa - Book Talk & Author Appearance

On Thursday, August 29, the Goethe-Institut Washington welcomes author Olga Grjasnowa for a discussion of her recently translated work, City of Jasmine (Gott ist nicht schüchtern). An intimate and striking novel that offers real insight into the horrors and inhumanity of war, whilst also focusing on the humanity of its protagonists, City of Jasmine marks Olga Grjasnowa as one of the most talented and admired young authors working in Germany today.
