John, we’re gearing up for the fight of our lives.
Militarizing American cities. Attacking dissenting voices. Terrorizing the most vulnerable among us. Trump’s authoritarian regime is here, and our old playbook simply isn’t enough.
And we’re not the only ones who feel this way. From coast to coast, across party lines - Common Cause members like you are telling us at town halls, in our inboxes, and when you show up to rallies with an unmistakable message: we must adapt to the threats before us.
That’s why we wrote you yesterday to let you know how Common Cause is shifting our strategy in the mid-decade redistricting battle – and that we will not pre-emptively oppose California or other states drawing new districts in response to gerrymandering in Texas. [1]
As the nation’s leading anti-gerrymandering advocacy group, we understand that Trump and Republican leaders’ attempt to lock in unaccountable power poses a generational threat to our ability to decide our own futures.
And because of this, we have created a fairness criteria for mid-decade redistricting efforts meant to counterbalance other gerrymandering - like those proposed in California and New York - which will let us respond to the most urgent threats and expand the movement for fair representation. [2]
Let’s be clear here, John: back-and-forth redistricting is far from our ideal way for democracy to work. But a blanket condemnation at this moment would be sitting on the sidelines in the face of authoritarianism.
We have spent decades, since the founding of Common Cause, demanding a democracy where voters – not politicians – make the decisions that matter.
From going to the Supreme Court in Common Cause v. Rucho to helping draft the Freedom to Vote Act - we have been at every step of this fight, taking heat from both parties in the process.
We’ve arrived at this moment because those institutions - the courts, Congress, and political leaders – have repeatedly failed to show up for We The People.
Common Cause won’t fail. We’ll continue to mobilize on every front against these would-be authoritarians – including the Texas GOP’s attempted gerrymander.
Will you chip in $3 to help us fuel this fight against politicians who think their own hold on power is more important than our rights?
