When the Texas Republicans in the Senate tried to pass redistricting earlier Tuesday, the Senate Dems walked out rather than vote for it. It’s not a move without its complications — state Attorney General Ken Paxton has threatened jail time for elected Dems who refuse to vote, for one thing — but, right now at least, it’s all they got.
If you’d been watching this live, you’d have seen the chat going wild for Senator Carol Alvarado, the Chair of the Democratic Caucus in the Senate, who led the march out of the Senate today. The battle over redistricting in Texas might not end the way we want it to, but there’s more here than just redistricting. The Democrats in Texas are showing that they have some fight in them.
